From History of Kentucky by Kerr, 1922
Butler County was named in honor of General Richard Butler, of Pennsylvania, who was an officer in the Revolutionary war. He was slain by an Indian in St. Clair's defeat.

History from Collins' History of Kentucky, 1877
Butler county, the 53rd organized, was formed in 1810, out of parts of Logan and Ohio counties; lies on both sides of Green river, in the SW part of the state; is bounded N by ohio and Grayson counties, E by Grayson adn Edmonson, S by Lyon and Warren, and W by Muhlenburg. The surface is hilly; the soil second-rate, but productive. A large extent of territory is too poor and broken ever to be turned to agricultural uses. The hill lands are admirably adapted to grazing and fruit growing; the peach crop has not failed, on some of these elevations, for many years. The hills are full of coal.
