| (LONDON, KY) – On Saturday, April
13, 2002 at approximately 7:15 p.m. Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron age
48 was shot and killed while attending a political rally and fish fry near
the Shopville Fire Department in Pulaski County. At approximately
7:20 pm the Kentucky State Police in London were notified of the shooting
and began responding to the scene. A Pulaski County Deputy and a member
of the Shopville Fire Department were able to apprehend the suspect approximately
5 miles from the scene. At 7:41 p.m. Kentucky State Police Trooper Chris
Ison arrived to assist at which time the suspect was released into his
custody.
The Pulaski County Coroners Office pronounced
Sheriff Catron dead at the scene. An autopsy will be preformed to determine
cause of death. Sam Catron has been the sheriff since 1985 and was seeking
re-election.
The Kentucky State Police will providing
extra officers to the area.
At this time no funeral arrangements are
available.
