Update - Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron Murdered

 (LONDON, KY) - On Saturday, April 13, 2002 at approximately 7:15 p.m. EDT, Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron was shot and killed while attending a political rally and fish fry near the Shopville Fire Department in Pulaski County. At approximately 7:20 pm the Kentucky State Police in London were notified of the shooting and began responding to the scene. 

Approximately five (5) miles from the scene of the murder, a suspect was located by a Pulaski County Sheriff's Deputy as well as a member of the Shopville Fire Department. 

On Sunday, April 14, 2002 at 3:45 am EDT, Kentucky State Police charged Danny S. Shelley with Murder of a Police Officer, a capitol offense punishable by the death penalty. Mr. Shelley, age 31, of Eubank, Kentucky, was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.

Pulaski County Coroner, Allen Stringer, pronounced Sheriff Sam Catron dead at the scene, at 7:20 pm EDT. Sheriff Catron, age 48, had been the Pulaski County Sheriff since 1985 and was currently seeking re-election. An autopsy will be performed by the State Medical Examiner's Office in Frankfort to determine the exact cause of death. 

Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. Details will be provided once they become available.

The Kentucky State Police will assign additional Troopers to Pulaski County to continue providing police services to Pulaski County citizens.

Jim McWhorter, Pulaski County Chief Deputy has been sworn in as the new Pulaski County Sheriff.

The investigation into the murder of Sheriff Catron is continuing. Det. Todd Dalton is the case officer.
