Update on Pulaski Sheriff Murder Investigation

 The investigation into the shooting of Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron continues by the Kentucky State Police.  The shooting occurred on KY 1956 (Old KY 80) across the street from the Shopville Volunteer Fire Department in eastern Pulaski County.

On Saturday, April 13, 2002, at approximately 1915 hours, Sheriff Sam Catron was leaving a fish fry/political rally at the Shopville Volunteer Fire Department.  As Sheriff Catron was approaching his vehicle he sustained a single gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene at 1920 hours by Pulaski County Coroner Alan Stringer. 

A short time later, a suspect was located on KY 1675 (Acorn – Mt. Victory Road) by a Pulaski County deputy and a member of the Shopville Volunteer Fire Department.

On Sunday, April 14, 2002 at 3:45 am EDT, Kentucky State Police charged Danny S. Shelley with Murder of a Police Officer, a capitol offense punishable by the death penalty. Mr. Shelley, age 30, of Eubank, Kentucky, was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center and is being held without bond.

The preliminary investigation revealed the fatal round was fired from a considerable distance. A rifle believed to be the murder weapon was recovered.

The murder investigation is continuing by Kentucky State Police Detective Todd Dalton.  Anyone with any information regarding the murder of Sheriff Catron is asked to contact Kentucky State Police at 1-800-222-5555.

Funeral arrangements for Sheriff Sam Catron are incomplete and will be provided once they are finalized.
